The political relationship between King Faisal and the Shiite religious scholars in Iraq (1918-1333) and its impact on the political development in the modern history of Iraq

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the relationship between Faisal b. Al -Hussein b. ‘Ali and the Shiite religious scholars in Iraq, especially in (Najaf - Karbala - Samarra – Al-Kadhimiya) during the period from 1918 to 1933, and the reflection of this relationship on the internal politics of Iraq.
Also, this study deals with the beginning of the emergence of the relationship between Faisal and the Shiite religious scholars in Iraq and the development of this relationship during the period between 1918-1920. In addition, the study deals with claim which call Faisal to be as a ruler of Iraq between 1920 - 1921. It also focuses on the role of Shiite religious scholars in appointing Faisal as King of Iraq in 1921.
Then this study looks at the fluctuation of the relationship between King Faisal and Shiite religious scholars until the occurrence of disagreement and clash came between them, which led to political isolation for Shiite religious scholars between 1921-1933. This study relied on documents from the British archives and local documents, as well as, other major sources focusing on this important aspect of Iraq's modern history
