The Cista Mystica in Greek and Roman Arts

Abstract

Many symbols of the deity`s attributes appeared in different types of Greek and Roman art, each one of these attributes and symbols refers to a specific deity, and each symbol is dedicated to a particular deity, but perhaps the appearance of each symbol has symbolism associated with a specific event or phenomenon found in the same period. The research deals with the depiction and symbolism of the Basket of Secrets which is called “Cista Mystica” in the Greek and Roman arts. It is a cylindrical basket and it is a symbol of the goddess Demeter, the goddess of fertility and the protector of agricultural lands. The appearance of the basket of secrets on the coinage sometimes refers to a specific event related to the period of issuance of the coinage, and the research discusses the importance of its appearance, its symbolism, examples of its appearance on various types of Greco-Roman art, and the reasons for its appearance
