Interrogative Words (When, How, Where, Which, What) between AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ and Grammarians

Abstract

This research deals the issue of studying the impact of the philosophical culture of AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ (339 AH - 950 AD) on his treatment of linguistic topics, by moving from abstract material meanings to mental meanings, to achieve the duality that enables him to reconcile between language and what it includes of Greek philosophical thought. The research conducts a comparative inductive, descriptive, analytical, method; based on monitoring a group of interrogative words that AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ dealt with in his book (Al-Huruf), and studying how he analyzed it, then comparing with what was stated in the grammatical books that dealt with the same interrogative words. However, the research aims to link Al-Fᾱrᾱbῑ's philosophical culture, and applying the language to serve the philosophy. In addition, proofing the depth vision of Al-Fᾱrᾱbῑ Aristotelian philosophy without literal transport, on the other hand, it presents the roles of AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ's style in cultural and linguistic communication between nations, in intellectual and cultural era reached zenith.
The study reached the identification of the clear differences between AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ and grammarians in their presentation of interrogative words and it's uses in different contexts, and explaining the clear role of philosophy in complicating linguistic issues; which contributed to AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ to introducing new structures and linguistic methods that were not known in linguistic books, this means the philosophy was in the service of language, and the language was in the service of philosophy, which gave language new dimensions that reflect AL-Fᾱrᾱbῑ's culture and his comprehensive view of linguistic philosophy.
