Abstract

Arabic poetry is one of the most significant literary arts in Arab history, and it continues to hold a revered place in contemporary Arab culture. The Arabs remain committed to this cultural heritage, attempting to integrate it with modern technological means to preserve the integrity and essence of classical poetry. This paper aims to review and discuss the methods and techniques used in the automated processing of Arabic poetry meters, focusing on modern natural language processing techniques and their applications to Arabic poetry, as well as the challenges they face. The research examines various tools and programs utilized for analyzing Arabic poetry, its meters, and rhymes, specifically those that are accessible and testable. By selecting a curated sample of poetic verses according to defined criteria, considered a gold standard that encompasses all meters of classical Arabic poetry and its common usages, the study evaluates the effectiveness of these programs and tools in automatically identifying Arabic poetry meters and prosody. Furthermore, it compares the performance of these tools based on comprehensive evaluation metrics that highlight their strengths and weaknesses. The study concludes with recommendations aimed at improving the functionality of these tools.
